DESCRIPTION
Height 20–25m. Deciduous. Crown coneshaped, slender at first, domed in old trees. Bark smooth, dark silver-grey, fissured and darker later. Leaves round or oval, 7–13cm long, with 2–3 pairs of lobes. Vivid red autumn colour.
FLOWERS AND FRUITS
Female flowers in axils of new growth in groups of 3–4. Round acorns 1.2cm long ripen in second autumn.
HABITAT
Native to North America, growing in wet sites in the wild. Widely cultivated in Europe.
